Mexico in February 2026: Carnival, Gray Whales & the Peak of Winter
February is Mexico’s Carnival month — and arguably its peak wildlife month simultaneously. Mazatlán throws the biggest Carnival in Latin America outside of Rio and Barranquilla, Veracruz celebrates the oldest carnival in the Americas, and gray whales in Baja California Sur hit their peak “friendly whale” behavior with calves grown bold enough to approach boats. Valentine’s Day falls directly inside Carnival week in 2026. Monarch butterflies are at full strength in Michoacán. The Caribbean is sargassum-free and perfect.

Why February Works for Travelers
February falls in Mexico’s deep dry season across most of the country, is off-peak outside Carnival cities, and delivers two of the country’s three great wildlife spectacles at maximum intensity (gray whales + monarch butterflies). If you’re not going for Carnival, you’ll find:
- No crowds, lower prices than December or March spring break
- Gray whales at their best — February calves are weeks old and bold; boats in Baja lagoons get extremely close, with Cabo San Lucas, Loreto, San Jose del Cabo, and Todos Santos useful as Baja road-trip stops between Los Cabos and La Paz
- Monarch butterflies still at peak — Morelia is one of the easiest city bases for the sanctuaries, and the colonies do not start dispersing until March
- Caribbean beaches at their finest — Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Tulum, Akumal, Puerto Morelos, Bacalar, Isla Mujeres, Holbox: calm, clear water, zero sargassum
- Pacific coast peak conditions — Puerto Vallarta, Punta Mita, San Pancho, Mazatlán, Colima, Manzanillo, Puerto Escondido, Mazunte, Zipolite, Huatulco: sunshine every day, warm ocean
- Dry central-Mexico, northern-city, Veracruz highland, Chiapas, and Tabasco route escapes — Valle de Bravo, Toluca, Dolores Hidalgo, Tepoztlán, Cuernavaca, Puebla, Cholula, Tlaxcala, Huamantla, Val’Quirico, Zacatlán, Taxco, León, Lagos de Moreno, Aguascalientes, Chihuahua, Monterrey, Linares, Matehuala, Saltillo, Torreón, Gómez Palacio, Monclova, Reynosa, Hermosillo, Guaymas, Ciudad Obregón, Tampico, Coatzacoalcos, Minatitlan, Tuxtla Gutierrez, Villahermosa, Palenque, Paraíso, Xico, Jalpan de Serra, and the colonial/highland routes give you warm or cool days, market food, mountain views, coffee-country side trips, shopping, cacao country, ruins, oysters, lagoon scenery, mission-route drives, canyon logistics, Sonoran food-and-airport staging, Yaqui culture, glorias-and-food road stops, Sea of Cortez seafood stops, Real de Catorce staging, La Laguna route support, and easy regional add-ons
- Humpback whale peak at Puerto Vallarta — 600+ humpbacks in Banderas Bay through March
Carnival 2026: Mazatlán, Veracruz & Beyond (February 12–17)
Ash Wednesday falls on February 18, 2026, making Carnival week February 12–17.
Mazatlán Carnival — Mexico’s Biggest
Mazatlán claims the third-largest Carnival in the world after Rio de Janeiro and Barranquilla, drawing 500,000 to over 1 million visitors during its 6-day run (Thursday through Tuesday before Ash Wednesday).
What happens:
- Ceremonial burning of “Bad Humor” on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday (opening night)
- Nightly parades along the 21km malecón with elaborate floats, live bands, and costumed performers
- Queen of Carnival coronation — one of Mexico’s most anticipated annual pageants
- Sea battle (La Batalla Naval) with fireworks over the bay — usually the Saturday night centerpiece
- Free outdoor concerts: banda, norteño, and cumbia at the malecón amphitheater every night
Mazatlán Carnival logistics:
- Best viewing: Olas Altas and the malecón amphitheater area (free, arrive early for parade nights)
- Hotels book solid a year in advance for Carnival weekend — book now for 2027
- Valentine’s Day (February 14) falls inside Carnival 2026 — the Saturday night “Naval Battle” spectacle coincides with it this year
- Budget: expect hotel prices 3–5× normal during Carnival week
Getting to Mazatlán: Direct flights from CDMX (2hr), Guadalajara (1hr), Monterrey, Dallas, Los Angeles, Denver (MZT airport). ADO and Primera Plus buses from Guadalajara (4hr) and CDMX (13hr).

Veracruz Carnival — The Oldest in the Americas
Veracruz has celebrated Carnival since 1609 — making it the oldest carnival in the Americas. It’s smaller and more local-feeling than Mazatlán’s spectacle, which is what makes it special.
What distinguishes it:
- Son jarocho music is everywhere — the birth city of “La Bamba” does Carnival with harps and jaranas
- La Quema del Mal Humor (Burning of Bad Humor) parade satirizes politicians
- Danzón is the social dance of choice — elegant couple dancing, not the frantic energy of Mazatlán
- Veracruz’s seafood during Carnival: chilpachole de jaiba and arroz a la tumbada at the old city market
Smaller Carnival Celebrations Worth Seeking Out
| City | Character | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Campeche | Colonial-walled city backdrop | Elegant costumes, UNESCO setting, much smaller crowds |
| Mérida | Yucatecan traditions | Free street parties, jarana dancing, accessible from Cancún |
| CDMX | Iztapalapa neighborhood | Community Carnival with local dancing, no tourist infrastructure |
| Huejotzingo, Puebla | ”Battle of Puebla” mock battle | January-February Carnival includes a reenactment of the French Intervention — unique in Mexico |
Día de la Candelaria (February 2): The Tamale Obligation
February 2 is Día de la Candelaria — the 40-day celebration after Christmas that closes the holiday season. For travelers, the key detail: whoever found the baby Jesus figurine in the January 6 rosca de reyes cake is obligated to host a tamale party on February 2.
This creates a uniquely Mexican moment: millions of homes host tamale lunches, and tamale vendors do their biggest sales of the year. In markets across Mexico — especially Oaxaca, Puebla, CDMX, and Veracruz — February 2 means tamale carts on every corner from dawn.
For travelers: If you’re in Mexico on February 2, go to any mercado and eat tamales. Oaxaca’s Mercado 20 de Noviembre, Puebla’s Mercado de Sabores, CDMX’s Mercado Jamaica, and Pátzcuaro market areas all make Día de la Candelaria feel local and food-centered.
Animal blessings tradition: In many towns, February 2 also involves bringing animals (pets, livestock, seeds, farming tools) to church for blessing — a syncretic tradition mixing Aztec Tláloc rain festival with Catholic Candlemas.
Gray Whale Season: February Is the Peak Month (Baja California Sur)
If January is the start of gray whale peak, February is the absolute sweet spot. By mid-February, female gray whales have been in the lagoons for 6–8 weeks with their calves. The calves — born in late December and January — are now strong enough to approach boats confidently. This is when the famous “friendly whale” behavior is most consistent and most intense.
In Laguna San Ignacio, certified eco-camps report February as the month they get the most sustained whale interactions. Calves that were shy in January become curious and bold.
Why Baja gray whales are unique: These are the only wild whales in the world that routinely approach small boats, lift their calves to be touched, and hold still while passengers stroke their barnacled skin. This behavior is documented nowhere else on earth. Marine biologists believe it began with a single whale in the 1970s and spread across generations.
| Lagoon | February Status | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Laguna San Ignacio | PEAK — most intimate | The definitive experience; eco-camps fill months ahead |
| Laguna Guerrero Negro | PEAK — most whales | Highest whale density; day tours from Guerrero Negro town |
| Bahía Magdalena | PEAK | Closest to La Paz (230km); possible day trip from La Paz or San Carlos |
February logistics:
- San Ignacio eco-camps: book by September for February (they sell out 100%)
- Guerrero Negro day tours: book 2–3 months ahead for Feb; can still find spots closer
- Bahía Magdalena from Puerto San Carlos or López Mateos: generally bookable in January for February dates
- Cost: $60–80 USD for day boat tours; $350–500 USD/night at San Ignacio eco-camps (includes all meals + unlimited daily whale tours)

Monarch Butterflies: Still Peak in February
The monarch colonies in Michoacán and Mexico State are at their maximum density in February. Unlike January, there’s no risk of finding a colony still building — by February, all the monarchs have arrived from Canada, and the sanctuaries are at absolute peak.
| Sanctuary | State | February Status |
|---|---|---|
| El Rosario | Michoacán | PEAK — most spectacular, most crowded |
| Sierra Chincua | Michoacán | PEAK — better photography, fewer people |
| Cerro Pelón | Mexico State | PEAK — most remote, best for quieter experience |
| Piedra Herrada | Mexico State | PEAK (closes late February) |
February-specific tip: The butterflies start to move in late February — warming temperatures signal the beginning of their spring migration north. If you visit in the last week of February, you may see clusters taking flight en masse as scouts begin testing the northern routes. This is different from January when they’re settled and still.
Visit on a warm day: Check weather before driving to the sanctuaries. Cold, overcast mornings = butterflies tightly clustered on branches (still impressive but not flying). Sunny days 11 AM–3 PM = butterflies flying in swarms.

Valentine’s Day in Mexico (February 14)
In Mexico, Valentine’s Day is Día del Amor y la Amistad — Day of Love and Friendship. Unlike in the US where it’s a couples-only holiday, Mexico includes all meaningful relationships: close friends, family members, and coworkers.
What you’ll see on February 14:
- Restaurants everywhere are booked solid with couples AND friend groups
- Street vendors sell roses, stuffed animals, and heart-shaped balloons from every corner
- Public serenades (mariachis or trios) are common in parks and restaurants
- In 2026, Valentine’s Day falls on the Saturday of Carnival week in Mazatlán — the city hosts its spectacular “Naval Battle” fireworks show that night
Best destinations for Valentine’s Day in Mexico:
- San Miguel de Allende — romantic colonial streets, pink parish glow at dusk, exceptional restaurants
- Guanajuato — colorful alleys, viewpoints, callejoneadas, and better value than San Miguel

- Playa del Carmen — walkable base, Cozumel ferry, beach clubs, and cenotes

Carnival premium: Hotels in Mazatlán and Veracruz charge 3–5× normal rates for Carnival week. If you haven’t booked for 2026, they’re sold out. Plan 2027 Carnival by September 2026.

- New York → Cancún: $290–480 round trip
- Los Angeles → Los Cabos: $200–360 round trip

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the weather like in Mexico in February? February is deep dry season across most of Mexico. The Pacific coast, Caribbean coast, Yucatán Peninsula, and the Oaxacan highlands all have clear skies, minimal rain, and comfortable temperatures (22–29°C by day). The main exception is northern Mexico — Chihuahua, Creel, Monterrey, and Saltillo still see cold days (8–15°C) and occasional frost at altitude.
When is Carnival in Mexico in 2026? Carnival 2026 runs approximately February 12–17 (through Mardi Gras on February 17, before Ash Wednesday February 18). Mazatlán celebrates for 6 days (Thursday–Tuesday); Veracruz follows a similar schedule. Mazatlán is the largest Carnival in Mexico and one of the biggest in Latin America. Book hotels in Mazatlán or Veracruz at least 6 months ahead for future Carnival dates.
Is February a good month to see gray whales in Mexico? February is arguably the best month for gray whale watching in Baja California Sur. By February, calves born in December–January are weeks old and bold enough to approach whale watching boats voluntarily. The famous “friendly whale” behavior — where mothers bring their calves to be touched by tourists — peaks in February at Laguna San Ignacio, Laguna Guerrero Negro, and Bahía Magdalena.
Are monarch butterflies in Mexico in February? Yes — February is peak season for monarch butterflies in Michoacán. The butterflies arrived from Canada in late October and build through January. By February, the colonies at El Rosario, Sierra Chincua, and Cerro Pelón hold their maximum population — hundreds of millions of butterflies covering the trees. In late February, they begin preparing for their northward migration, so you may see mass flights on warm afternoons.
Is the Caribbean coast good in February? February is one of the best months for Mexico’s Caribbean coast — Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel, Tulum, Akumal, Bacalar, Isla Mujeres, and Holbox. The water is clear, sargassum is at its minimum (it builds from April onward), and temperatures are perfect at 26–28°C. Cozumel diving visibility is at its best of the year: 20–30 meters. This is high season pricing, but conditions are among the finest of any month.
