Getting to Tequisquiapan

Tequisquiapan is a small city and head of the municipality of the same name, located in the southern part of Queretaro.

Mexico City is about 185 km away on federal highway 57D towards Queretaro.

The state capital, Santiago de Queretaro, is 63 km west of the Magical Town, and the second famous city, San Juan del Rio, is even closer, only 20 km away.

Other cities close to Tequis are Toluca, 165 km away; Pachuca, 196 km; Guanajuato, 210 km; Leon, 230 km; and Morelia, 245 km.

Besides tasting delicious wine and cheese, I will tell you what to do in Tequisquiapan on your next visit so you can enjoy it to the fullest. Let’s start!

1. Ride the hot air balloons!

This is probably the best thing to do here. The tour takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes, and there are different packages and prices for you to enjoy.

Although I was a little nervous at first, I really enjoyed it.

Most tours include transfer from the meeting point to the balloon airport, access to a mobile cafeteria and souvenirs, and safety practices.

Do you know who created the first hot air balloon?

On June 4, 1783, Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier made a public demonstration in a French market.

A hot air balloon of ten meters in diameter was built with cloth and paper. Imagine, after 238 years, we are still using it.

This is something unique in Tequisquiapan; you should not miss it.

2. Visit the Tequisquiapan water parks

One of my favorite things to do on my trips is swim, dive, go on water slides, and enjoy the water, and this Magical Town is no exception.

Tequisquiapan has three water parks for you to have the most fun:

• The first is Fantasia Aquatica, which has a family and relaxing atmosphere. It is located on the Tequisquiapan to Ezequiel Montes highway. It has affordable prices and is open daily from 9:00 -18:00
• There is also the Termas del Rey park which is also located on the same highway. It is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9:00 to 18:00
• Oasis is a water park with hot springs, a camping area, slides, a zip line, and a place to have a bonfire and eat delicious marshmallows. Prices range from 75 to 250 pesos per person. It is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9:00 to 18:00

3. Try the Tonatiu Iquzayampa Temazcal

Tonatiu Iquzayampa it’s a pre-Hispanic temazcal.

A must-visit in Tequisquiapan Queretaro, ideal for a relaxing time with fire, water, and local plant species.

What does Temazcal mean? it means, “steam bath,” and it played an important role in social and religious life in Mesoamerica.

That is why Tonatiu Iquzayampa is a temazcalli; from Nahuatl tema, “steam,” and calli, “house” can be defined as “steam bathhouse.”

The person guiding you to this spiritual treat is called “temazcalero,” which will direct you to spectacular things like massages, hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, and meditation exercises.

4. Visit the Opal Mines of Tequisquiapan Queretaro

Get to know the mining past of Tequis, where you can become a miner for a day and pick stones like a pro.

The Opal mine is located just 10 minutes from Tequisquiapan, in the community of La Trinidad, which has 2,149 inhabitants.

You can visit the opal workshop and buy some souvenirs in the store.

In addition, the mine is better known as “El Redentor,” which began to work in approximately 1840. It is the only mine that has opals called “lechosos.”

Because of its density, its salification is superior to those of Australia and other countries, so they give great importance because it is the way to generate income for the locals.

Tours start at 10:00 am and last about two hours.

It is one of the most entertaining and epic things to do in Tequisquiapan that you will remember for years to come. Please write it down, so you don’t forget.

Being in the cave is something I like, going on an adventure and feeling as if you were in a labyrinth; it is pure adrenaline, and I think you will be thrilled.

5. Tequisquiapan Cheese and Wine Museum

Now comes one of the best parts, the tastings! You will learn how the first grapes or wild berries arrived in the state and the elaboration process in the museum.

The different types of wines and cheeses produced here since past times, such as manchego al vino, adobera sazonada, panela marqueta, otomí, among others.

At the end of the tour, you can taste a fondue made with local cheeses, pasta, salads, Valencian paella, and wine.

This museum was founded by two houses of the most important cheese and wine brands, Vai Cheeses and Freixenet Cavas.

It is one of the most important attractions of Tequisquiapan; the reason why thousands of people visit, and you should also see why it is so famous.

Finally, the Cheese and wine museum is located at 19 Salvador Michaus Street, and it is easy to get to because there are signs that will guide you until you get there.

6. The Main Square

Ideal for a walk and sharing a lovely sunset. You can take some great pictures for your social networks in front of Miguel Hidalgo Square.

Also, visit the Temple of Santa Maria de la Asuncion and appreciate its central tower and clock dating from 1897, which is still in operation; it is something unique that you must see.

In 1551 the town was baptized with the name of Santa Maria de la Asuncion y de las Aguas Calientes. In 1656 the name of the town was changed to Tequisquiapan.

On her feast day, August 15, families from all the municipality communities make offerings to the Virgin in the historic center with traditional dances and music.

7. Visit the Museum of Miniatures

Are you a fan of miniatures? You won’t want to miss this place on your tour. A small museum that will make you feel like a giant.

With approximately 500 characters in more than 170 traditional scenes of Mexico. The craftwork of over 30 years of Professor Teresa Cisneros.

The teacher intended to recreate the critical moments of our country’s history in a fun and educational way so that children would learn it faster.

At first, she did it this way, but then she saw the significant influence on the town and began to recreate other important moments and places of the Republic.

The miniatures museum gathers families to play traditional board games: Mexican lottery, snakes and ladders, and marbles. It is an excellent choice if you travel with children.

8. La Pila park in Tequisquiapan, Queretaro

Want to have a picnic day? The beautiful and iconic park “La Pila” is the place.

Nowadays, it hosts great events in Tequisquiapan, such as the Cheese and Wine Fair, which takes place every year between May and June.

On the other hand, the park was founded in 1567. The Spaniards who lived in Tequis took advantage of the water flowing from two natural springs.

That is how they built “La Pila Grande.” That spring was located on what is now the park’s grounds, and that is where it got its name.

The park is surrounded by ahuehuetes and sabinos (cypress trees).

The ahuehuetes are trees native to our country; they have been known as the “Old men of the water” since 1912.

As you can see, this Pueblo Magico has so many cool things to do.
