Understanding Mexico’s Safe Drinking Rules: Raise a Glass Responsibly

So what is the drinking age in Mexico anyway? The legal age to consume alcohol in Mexico is 18 years old.

According to the National Center for Biotechnology in the United States, the body and organs of an adolescent are not fully developed before this age, so any foreign substance harmful to their health can cause irreversible damage to their growth.

Alcohol consumption before the age of 18 impedes neuronal development.

The organs most affected by premature alcohol consumption are the liver and the brain. If a minor consumes alcohol in excess, the brain loses the capacity to develop its neuronal connections to 100%, preventing cognitive abilities from maturing and causing problems in learning and long-term memory.

On the other hand, the liver loses its ability to process alcohol the younger you start drinking, leading to diseases such as cirrhosis and other serious health problems.

There are several organizations committed to eradicating underage drinking, an effort in which parents, authorities, institutions, vendors, and minors together can eliminate premature alcohol consumption.

The goal is to positively impact the health of many young people and the culture of Mexican society.

Like any other country, the best tool to combat alcohol abuse is knowledge; this is why I want to share with you some basic but important tips to ensure safe and happy drinking.

1. Do not offer or sell alcohol to minors

Come on people, we all know this better.

Unless the minor hangs out with the parents at home, a small glass of wine or one beer won’t hurt anybody.

But other than that, do not offer alcohol to minors, since in addition to affecting their physical development, especially that of the liver and brain, you will also affect their social and emotional health.

2. If you drink, don’t drive

Yup, another important one. If you are going to drink alcohol, do not drive (I tell you from personal experience, not good!).

When you drink to excess, you lose many of your motor skills, making you incapable of driving. Do not put your life at risk, nor that of others.

3. Drink moderately

Let’s say you’re a beer drinker; you know that the only way to enjoy a good glass of ice-cold beer is in moderation.

Or a good mezcal (my favorite) is enjoyed sip by sip; plus, you have to pay attention to characteristics such as color, aroma, and of course, taste.

Please don’t overdo it and savor your favorite drink!

4. If someone decides not to drink, respect their decision

Abstentionism is an individual decision and should not be questioned, much less insulted.

If a person decides not to consume alcohol at a meeting or party, there is no reason to incite him. Show respect.

5. Accompany your drink with food

Drinking on an empty stomach is NOT a good idea. Try always to accompany your drinking with a meal or some snack.

Wine (or beer) pairings are delicious, as they can encourage certain flavors in your favorite dishes.

6. Drink a glass of water for every glass of wine/cocktail

To remain hydrated, don’t forget to drink a glass of water for every cocktail or beer; this will help your body process alcohol much more efficiently.

I hope this guide helps! If you come to Mexico to vacation and party, I wish you all the fun in the world. You’ll have a blast!

Just remember to drink responsibly, pace yourself, and stay out of trouble. If you have any comments or want to share some ideas, please feel free to do so below.
